As the Cargo Solidarity Union has decided to carry out an all-out struggle for three days in Danyang, Chungbuk, where cement factories are concentrated, the police are deploying security personnel around Hanil Cement and Sungshin Cement on the 7th in preparation for any possible situation. [Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Despite the nationwide collective transport refusal by the Cargo Solidarity of the Public Transport Workers' Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, the cement industry’s shipment rate reached 99.7%, returning to normal levels.
According to the Korea Cement Association on the 7th, the cement industry shipped about 179,500 tons out of approximately 180,000 tons scheduled for shipment that day, despite the collective transport refusal by the Cargo Solidarity. About 500 tons were not shipped. The damage amount is approximately 50 million KRW, with cumulative damages reaching 118.1 billion KRW.
The near-normal recovery of shipment volume is attributed to the increase in cement shipments due to the recovery of construction period delays at nationwide construction sites and the expansion of inventory at ready-mix concrete plants, according to the cement industry’s analysis. However, in some areas of the metropolitan area such as Paldang, where the Cargo Solidarity membership rate is high, as well as in Busan and Jeju regions, cement shipments remain very low despite work commencement orders.
A representative from the Cement Association stated, "Normalization may take some time until the cement supply shortage in some parts of the metropolitan area, Busan, and Jeju is resolved," adding, "The cement industry requests the Cargo Solidarity to promptly end the transport refusal and return to the work sites."
