[Asia Economy Reporters Naju-seok and Park Jun-i] The Democratic Party of Korea has called for parliamentary mediation regarding the Safe Freight Rate System. It warned that if the government and ruling party do not accept the Safe Freight Rate System, they may take forceful measures such as unilaterally passing legislation related to the system.
On the 7th, Park Hong-geun, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, stated at the Democratic Party's Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, "Yesterday, the Democratic Party publicly proposed to the government and ruling party that the National Assembly mediate to resolve the Cargo Solidarity strike," adding, "Since then, I, along with the ruling party floor leader, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economy, and the Democratic Party's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee member, presented a reasonable mediation plan to the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport that the majority of the public agrees with, urging the government and ruling party to accept it."
He continued, "If President Yoon Seok-yeol is not trying to regain approval ratings by erasing workers, and if the ruling party intends to manage the social crisis and contribute to overcoming the economic crisis, they should provide a responsible response." He added, "If they ultimately refuse, with only ten days left before the Safe Freight Rate System sunset, the Democratic Party will proceed with legislation based on common sense of the people."
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, also said, "There is no visible effort from the government and ruling party to resolve the Cargo Solidarity strike," adding, "The problem cannot be solved by a strong-arm standoff. The National Assembly will actively work to mediate the conflict." He further requested, "We ask for an urgent three-party mediation meeting between the two major parties and Cargo Solidarity," and urged, "We call for the president's magnanimous decision."
