Google Chromecast Built-in Dongle-type Set-top Box
Offers Over 270 Live Channels and VOD
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] LG Uplus announced on the 7th that it has exclusively launched the dongle-type set-top box ‘Chromecast with Google TV (4K) (hereinafter U+ Chromecast)’ in Korea, which allows users to access all content from live broadcasts to over-the-top (OTT) services.
Released through LG Uplus on the 30th of last month, the U+ Chromecast is the latest device supporting 4K resolution and is an officially released product in Korea with Korean language support. It features a simple design without complicated wiring, convenience to watch various OTT services on one screen, and supports 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos.
While customers who purchase Chromecast through overseas direct imports can only use OTT services, U+ Chromecast allows simultaneous access to about 270 live channels and 270,000 video-on-demand (VOD) titles provided by the IPTV service U+tv. Chromecast can be connected not only to TVs but also to monitors or beam projectors, enabling content access anywhere inside or outside the home.
Along with the official release of U+ Chromecast, LG Uplus also introduced a dedicated remote control optimized for U+tv viewing. The dedicated remote, equipped with various convenience functions and numeric keys for customers familiar with live TV viewing, can be purchased separately for 11,000 KRW at the official online store U+ Shop.
Subscription and activation are also convenient. U+ Chromecast can be activated through a technician’s visit like existing IPTV set-top boxes, or users can easily self-activate by applying online, receiving the device by courier, and connecting it to the TV. To prepare for device malfunctions or defects, LG Uplus has established a process to promptly respond to issues and provide after-sales service through its customer center.
U+tv subscribers can use U+ Chromecast by paying only 2,200 KRW per month (with a 3-year contract) as a device installment fee. The typical monthly rental fee for a set-top box (UHD4 standard) is 4,400 KRW, which is half the cost. Customers currently using U+tv through existing set-top boxes can receive a 50% discount on the usage fee if they additionally use Chromecast, and those using a 1G internet plan can use the device without any additional cost.
Geonyoung Lee, Executive Director of Media Services at LG Uplus, said, “U+ Chromecast is expected to receive positive responses from customers because it adds simplicity to home interiors without complicated wiring and is a convenient device that allows IPTV viewing at home and OTT content viewing outside.” He added, “Through this exclusive domestic launch, more customers, including those who have been inconvenienced by purchasing products through overseas direct imports, will be able to use Chromecast conveniently.”
Meanwhile, to celebrate the launch of U+ Chromecast, LG Uplus is running a promotion until the end of this year on its official website, offering a free U+ dedicated remote control and a 10,000 KRW Starbucks gift card to customers who apply and activate the service through the promotion page.
