AU Co., Ltd.'s 'Rear Occupant Awareness (ROA) Radar' won the 2023 CES Innovation Award. The CES Innovation Award is given by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) to products from companies that demonstrate outstanding technology and innovation.
Founded in 2019 by master's and doctoral researchers from the Department of Electrical Engineering at KAIST, AU specializes in radar signal processing technology that detects occupants inside vehicles using millimeter waves.
AU's rear occupant awareness radar prevents accidents where vulnerable mobility groups such as infants, disabled persons, and the elderly are left unattended in the rear seats of vehicles. The radar released by AU detects biometric signals such as passengers' breathing and heartbeat, offering higher detection accuracy compared to methods that simply measure movement or weight.
Additionally, it can simultaneously detect up to two rows with a single module, making it a cost-competitive next-generation promising sensor.
Kim Baek-hyun, CEO of AU, stated, "We are very pleased that AU's ROA radar has been recognized for its technological innovation on the global stage, and we will continue to introduce more innovative radar technologies."
Currently, AU is independently developing a wide range of signal processing algorithms, from in-cabin radars for vehicles to high-resolution imaging radars for autonomous vehicles, and is collaborating with numerous domestic and international Tier-1 suppliers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Meanwhile, last year, AU was selected as the first group in Daejeon for IBK Changgong, an innovation startup nurturing program operated by IBK Industrial Bank of Korea.
