[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] The Gangwon Province East Coast Headquarters announced on the 6th that it has secured 2.2 billion KRW in special grants for disaster and regional issues to prevent fishing vessel safety accidents and alleviate inconveniences faced by fishermen in using fishing ports.

The East Coast Headquarters plans to use the special grants to expand local fishing port vessel shelter (berthing) facilities and reinforce safety facilities within Gangwon Province.

Earlier last month, the East Coast Headquarters secured 1 billion KRW in special grants for disaster areas to establish vessel berthing and shelter facilities at Hosan Port.

This measure aims to safely berth 30 fishing vessels anchored at nearby ports during typhoons and other adverse weather conditions to prevent safety accidents among vessels in the southern Samcheok region.

Additionally, 1.2 billion KRW was secured in the regional issues special grants budget for the expansion of vessel berthing facilities at Samcheok Sinnam Port and the removal of underwater rock formations. The project is underway to allow ten 5-ton class vessels from the Sinnam fishing cooperative to berth.

A special grant of 1.5 billion KRW has been applied for to expand vessel berthing facilities at Sodol Port in Gangneung City, where a lack of berthing facilities causes difficulties for fishing vessel anchorage. The decision on whether this will be reflected is expected within this month.

Choi Seong-gyun, head of the East Coast Headquarters, stated, "We will work closely with the budget department to secure special grants for the fisheries sector, putting forth all efforts to protect the lives and property of fishermen."
