[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Dongwon Industries announced on the 6th that it has established a cooperative relationship with Hyundai and Kia Motors to recycle discarded fishing nets used for tuna fishing into automobile parts, leading efforts to preserve the marine ecosystem.
The two companies signed an agreement on "Promoting Eco-friendly Plastic Recycling" on the 24th of last month. Dongwon Industries will establish a system to separate and discharge approximately 465 tons of discarded fishing nets annually, while Hyundai and Kia will develop automobile parts recycled from these nets as raw materials.
Accordingly, Dongwon Industries plans to supply about 100 tons of recycled nylon material extracted annually from discarded fishing nets to Hyundai and Kia, who will apply it to plastic automobile parts such as engine covers.
A Dongwon Industries official stated, "As a global seafood company operating in the ocean, we will continue to lead ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management to create a sustainable marine ecosystem."
