The relationship between South and North Korea can be described as an extreme love-hate relationship. They are one people, yet they have fought a war. While they talk about reconciliation and coexistence, it is not uncommon for them to suddenly turn hostile and utter words of hatred and curses. This is why the term "rollercoaster inter-Korean relations" emerged. Recently, tensions between the two Koreas have escalated as North Korea launched missiles and began preparations for nuclear tests.


In such circumstances, how many people still consider Korean reunification a top priority? It is not a problem that can be solved simply by ignoring it because of animosity. To prepare, one must see through the background and motives behind their actions?why they behave the way they do and what they truly want. For both security and peace, North Korea is an essential counterpart to understand. A book that can help with this has been published.


Professor Kim Yong-hyun of Dongguk University’s Department of North Korean Studies, along with several scholars, has released . Professor Kim, who serves as the director of Dongguk University’s North Korean Research Institute, is a frequent expert commentator in the media whenever North Korean issues arise. Currently, Dongguk University is the only comprehensive university offering an undergraduate program in North Korean Studies.


This book was edited under the responsibility of Professor Kim Yong-hyun to broaden understanding and the base of North Korean studies. PhDs from various fields (Kim Jong-su, Kim Sang-beom, Park Hyung-joon, Park Hee-jin, Kim Il-han, Park Min-joo, Ha Seung-hee, Heo Jeong-pil) wrote chapters based on university lectures and research outcomes. As an introductory text, it is written to make North Korea easily understandable to anyone. It is written simply so that not only students but also the general public can grasp North Korea’s history and realities.


The first chapter of the book covers North Korean politics. It explains North Korea’s political power and governance structure based on Juche ideology, which establishes an absolute one-man rule. It also provides an in-depth look at Chairman Kim Jong-un. The second chapter is about "North Korean Military and Diplomacy," including ▲the nature and structure of the North Korean military ▲characteristics of military policy in the Kim Jong-un era ▲features of North Korean diplomacy ▲North Korea’s diplomatic strategy under Kim Jong-un. Following this, the book covers ▲North Korean popular culture: literature, arts, and media ▲major changes in popular culture during the Kim Jong-un era ▲North Korean leisure culture: tourism and sports ▲tourism and sports policies in North Korea under Kim Jong-un. If you want to look at North Korea objectively and cool-headedly, beyond hollow nationalism or emotionally charged anti-communism, this book will serve as a compass.
