[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunjeong Lee] Korean soccer has advanced to the Round of 16 in the World Cup for the first time in 12 years. Our national team will compete against Brazil for a spot in the quarterfinals at 4 a.m. on the 6th (Korean time) at Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatar. Brazil secured first place in Group G during the group stage, setting up a match against our team, which finished second in Group H.

Brazil, ranked number 1 by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), is considered a strong favorite to win. They have won the World Cup a record five times. Since their last victory at the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, Brazil has not won the title, and this year they aim to reclaim the championship after 20 years. Korea, ranked 28th in the world, has a record of 1 win and 6 losses in A matches against Brazil. Objectively, the strength is inferior. However, Brazil suffered five injuries during the group stage, and Korea’s players are in high spirits after defeating the European powerhouse Portugal.

According to the referee assignment list announced by FIFA on the 4th, the referee for the Korea-Brazil Round of 16 match will be Cl?ment Turpin (40) from France. He was the referee for the Korea-Uruguay group stage match in Group H. At that time, he gave one yellow card to Uruguay’s Mart?n C?ceres and two yellow cards to Korea’s Cho Gue-sung (Jeonbuk Hyundai) and Korea’s head coach Paulo Bento, who protested a decision during stoppage time in the second half.

Turpin was born in France in 1982 and began refereeing at age 16 while also playing and coaching. He has officiated in France’s Ligue 1 since 2008 and was named the French Football Federation’s Best Referee in 2016.

He has been an international referee since 2010. He has officiated at UEFA Euro 2016, the Rio Olympics, the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, and the 2018 Russia World Cup.

Last year, he refereed the UEFA Europa League final, and about a year later, on May 28, he officiated the UEFA Champions League final, establishing himself as a leading European referee.

Turpin’s connection with Korea dates back to before the Qatar World Cup, having refereed the Korea-Mexico group stage match at the Rio Olympics and a European club competition match featuring Korea’s captain Son Heung-min (Tottenham).

Turpin will officiate the Korea-Brazil match alongside assistant referees Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore (both from France), who also worked with him during the Korea-Uruguay match. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be J?r?me Brisard (France), the same as in the Uruguay match. The fourth official will be Slavko Vin?i? from Slovenia.
