[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea Electric Wire is intensifying its efforts to target the rapidly growing ultra-high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable market worldwide.
Korea Electric Wire announced on the 5th that it has completed the development of a 500kV current-type cross-linked polyethylene ultra-high voltage direct current (XLPE HVDC) land cable system and received international certification from KEMA, a Netherlands-based internationally accredited testing institution.
500kV is the highest voltage among existing XLPE HVDC cable systems. Korea Electric Wire is the first in Korea to receive international certification for this cable from KEMA, and the second in the world after Japan.
HVDC is considered a key cable for long-distance, large-scale power transmission because it has less power loss than alternating current (AC) and no transmission distance limitations. HVDC insulated with XLPE is said to have excellent insulation and heat resistance performance as well as high durability.
Na Hyungkyun, CEO of Korea Electric Wire, said, "It is very encouraging that our HVDC technology has been recognized at a time when global demand for long-distance transmission is increasing and the spread of new and renewable energy sources is active. We will actively seek business opportunities not only by participating in large-scale HVDC projects planned domestically but also in new and renewable power grid projects that are gaining momentum in Europe and the United States."
