SK Gas Achieves '28 Consecutive Years of No Accidents' at Pyeongtaek Base

[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jung] SK Gas announced on the 5th that its LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) import terminal in Pyeongtaek has achieved 28 consecutive years of accident-free operation as of midnight on the 4th.

SK Gas Pyeongtaek Terminal can store a total of 200,000 tons of LPG, including 140,000 tons of propane and 60,000 tons of butane. It supplies LPG to the metropolitan area and central regions of Korea as well as overseas markets such as China, serving as a key hub for domestic and international LPG supply. Since beginning operations in December 1994, it has supplied LPG safely without a single incident of leakage, fire, or explosion, achieving a record of 28 years without accidents.

This achievement is the result of management’s "Safety First" leadership and the safety and health systems established at the terminal, with active participation and efforts from employees and partner company staff.

SK Gas has established a "SHE (Safety, Health, Environment) Master Plan" targeting the establishment of a "Global Top Tier" safety management system, implementing detailed tasks across four areas: building an autonomous safety culture, enhancing employee safety capabilities, system advancement, and responding to regulatory changes.

First, SK Gas strengthened SHE governance by forming a company-wide SHE committee and SHE task force directly under the CEO to establish SHE management strategies and conduct on-site compliance inspections. By introducing an SHE management system, it unified SHE management across business sites and enhanced company-wide safety management capabilities.

Various activities are also underway at the business sites for safety management. Through daily safety guardian activities led by responsible managers, all terminal members participate in safety inspections of equipment and work sites. If safety rules are violated, a work stoppage right is enforced to ensure that work proceeds only under fully safe conditions.

Additionally, equipment safety is regularly assessed, and timely equipment replacement and maintenance are conducted to prevent accidents caused by facility aging. Programs to motivate participation include selecting employees who actively engage in safety activities for overseas training opportunities and awarding bonuses to partner companies that contribute to accident-free achievements.

In particular, starting this year, SK Gas has established an internal diagnostic system covering 580 items across four areas to verify the adequacy of site safety regulations, employees’ understanding of rules, and on-site compliance, thereby identifying and improving vulnerabilities and completing a risk management system.

Yoon Byung-seok, President of SK Gas, sent a congratulatory message to the Pyeongtaek Terminal members on achieving accident-free operation, stating, "The 28 consecutive years of accident-free operation at SK Gas Pyeongtaek Terminal is the result of all members prioritizing safety with one heart and mind. I sincerely thank all the members of the Pyeongtaek Terminal for their hard work. I urge everyone to continue stable terminal operations by practicing principles to create a sustainable accident-free and incident-free workplace. SK Gas leaders will also lead by example through field-centered leadership and provide full support."

Going forward, SK Gas recognizes that "safety" is an essential condition to uphold the core value of "happiness" pursued by the group, and plans to practice SHE management based on communication and mutual trust with all stakeholders including management, employees, and partner company workers.
