Driver Arrested for Drunk Driving Fatality in School Zone: "Seriousness of Crime Confirmed"

[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] A man in his 30s has been arrested on charges of causing the death of a 9-year-old elementary school student who was hit while leaving school after drunk driving in a school zone.

On the 5th, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul announced that the Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant the day before for Mr. A, a man in his 30s, who is accused of causing death in a child protection zone under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and violating the Road Traffic Act. The Seoul Central District Court explained the reason for issuing the arrest warrant, stating, "Due to the seriousness of the crime, there is a risk of flight."

Mr. A is accused of hitting and killing a 9-year-old elementary school student on the road in front of the back gate of an elementary school in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, around 5 p.m. on the 2nd. At the time, Mr. A's blood alcohol concentration was at the level of license cancellation. The Gangnam Police Station arrested Mr. A at the scene on the day of the incident and applied for an arrest warrant.

The location where Mr. A caused the accident is a school zone, and it is expected that the so-called "Minsik Act" will be applied. The Minsik Act refers to a law that imposes aggravated punishment when a child dies in a school zone. The police plan to conduct further investigation on the arrested Mr. A and then send the case to the prosecution.
