Saving Water in Daily Life, Such as Doing Laundry Together... Urging Active Citizen Participation
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on the 30th that it will operate the ‘Suncheon City Drought Countermeasures Headquarters’ to overcome the drought.
The Suncheon City Drought Countermeasures Headquarters is led by Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu as the head and operates five teams: Situation General Control Team, Agricultural Water Team, Agricultural Products Countermeasures Team, Domestic Water Countermeasures Team, and Industrial Water Countermeasures Team.
Although it rained on the 28th, the city stated that it was insufficient to relieve the drought, and the water storage rate of Sangsa Dam, the main water source, is 37.2%, which is 67% of the average year, corresponding to the drought warning stage.
The city has held meetings with the Juam Dam Management Group and has been making efforts to overcome the drought by maintaining reservoirs, inspecting and purchasing paddy field equipment, and other measures. In addition, to overcome agricultural drought, measures such as developing groundwater wells and strengthening post-management are being implemented.
The city stated that so far, there has been no restricted water supply for domestic water due to the drought, and no reports of damage to crops have been received. The city is operating a comprehensive drought countermeasure situation room and is continuously inspecting and preparing alternative water sources in anticipation of industrial water shortages within the local industrial complex.
A Suncheon City official said, “According to the Korea Meteorological Administration’s announcement, less rain than usual is expected this winter, raising concerns about damage caused by drought,” and added, “To overcome this, active participation from citizens in saving water in daily life is necessary, such as collecting laundry water for reuse, washing dishes with collected water, placing water bottles in toilet tanks, and using a cup when brushing teeth.”
