[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] A civic group has filed a complaint against Democratic Party lawmakers who alleged that President Yoon Seok-yeol and Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon had a drinking party in Cheongdam-dong.
The civic group, the Committee for the Protection of Ordinary People's Livelihoods, announced on the 30th that it filed a complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on the 28th against seven lawmakers, including Jang Kyung-tae, a Supreme Council member of the Democratic Party, on charges of spreading false information, conspiracy, defamation, and insult. The allegation was that on July 19-20, President Yoon and Minister Han had a drinking party at a high-end bar in Cheongdam-dong with about 30 lawyers from the law firm Kim & Chang.
The Committee stated that they reproduced and spread false information, causing social confusion, and explained the reason for the complaint, saying, "Even though it has been proven to be false, they are pushing it as false testimony under coercive investigation."
A cellist identified as A, who claimed to have been present at the scene, was reported by the citizen media The Tamza to have told an ex-lover that they "witnessed the scene." The issue escalated when lawmaker Kim Eui-gyeom mentioned the report during the National Assembly Judiciary Committee's audit. Council member Jang disclosed the recorded phone conversation between A and the ex-lover at the Supreme Council meeting on the 27th.
