[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province is transforming 'Simgok Seowon' into a cultural space for citizens.

Located in Sanghyeon-dong, Suji-gu, Simgok Seowon is National Historic Site No. 530. It enshrines the memorial tablets of Jeongam Jo Gwang-jo and Hakpo Yang Paeng-son, leaders of the Sarim faction during King Jungjong's reign in the Joseon Dynasty. It was established in 1650 (the first year of King Hyojong) to commemorate Jo Gwang-jo's scholarship and virtue.

Yongin City announced on the 30th that since last year, it has been preparing a comprehensive maintenance plan and expanding the protection zone to create a foundation for the restoration of the Seowon, allowing citizens to enjoy it more closely. The city plans to develop it into a historical park by 2026.

As part of the comprehensive maintenance plan, the city will invest a total of 11.2 billion KRW from national, provincial, and city funds to develop Simgok Seowon into a 6,100㎡ historical park. The site will include an education center, walking trails, and green spaces designed around four themes: cultivation, rest, gathering, and exchange.

The education center, to be built with a total floor area of 1,900㎡ over one basement floor and three above-ground floors, will be designed as an educational and exhibition space for citizens.

The city plans to begin detailed design work next year and hold a residents' briefing session to gather public opinions.

A city official stated, "We will promote the cultural heritage value of Simgok Seowon and create a place where citizens can rest and interact," adding, "We will secure project funds in a timely manner to ensure the project proceeds smoothly."
