[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, has approved and announced the "Implementation Plan for the Water Supply Facilities for Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex."

The industrial water for the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster will be supplied at 265,000 tons per day (first phase). The pipeline transporting the industrial water will be installed from the intake point at Yeoju Weir on the Namhan River in Yeoju City, passing through Icheon City, to the project site, with a diameter of 1,500 mm and a length of 36.9 km.

Potable water will be supplied at 8,100 tons per day from the Yongin Water Purification Plant, and a 15.7 km long pipeline (400 mm diameter) will be laid from the water transmission pipeline near Yurim Reservoir to the project site.

The water supply facilities will begin construction next month and are scheduled to be completed by July 2026, before the semiconductor fabs (factories) become operational.

Since last year, Yongin City has been continuously consulting with 15 related organizations, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Hangang River Basin Environmental Office, Yeoju City, and Icheon City, to install the water supply facilities for the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex.

The approval process was somewhat delayed due to Yeoju City's demand for a win-win plan for the water intake area, but the issue was resolved on the 21st when Yeoju City, SK Hynix, Korea Land and Housing Corporation, and other related organizations signed a win-win agreement.

Another key infrastructure required for the operation of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, the power supply facility, began construction in May with a target completion date in the second half of 2026.

Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin emphasized, "With the approval of the water supply facility permit, both water and electricity necessary for the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex can be supplied stably. We will spare no administrative support to ensure that the first semiconductor fab can operate smoothly in the first half of 2027."

The Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is a project where the project implementer, Yongin General Industrial Complex Co., Ltd., is developing a 4.15 million square meter site in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, and SK Hynix is investing 120 trillion won to build a total of four semiconductor fabs.
