“Police Hospital Branch, Naturally in Changwon” … People Power Party Lawmakers from Gyeongnam Region Provide Support

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] “The branch of the National Police Hospital should be established in Gyeongnam, where there is abundant medical demand from police and firefighters but no public medical institution to address it.”

On the 28th, lawmakers from the People Power Party in the Gyeongnam region emphasized the necessity of building the National Police Hospital branch in the Changwon area.

The Jinhae-gu Party Committee, provincial council members, and Changwon city council members held a press conference at the provincial council briefing room and made these remarks.

The lawmakers stated, “The metropolitan area has the main National Police Hospital in Songpa, Seoul, and the central region is about to complete a fire hospital in Eumseong, Chungbuk by 2025, but there is none in the southern region.”

They cited factors such as ▲meeting medical demand ▲population density ▲convenient transportation ▲development plans, calling Jinhae-gu, Changwon City the ‘optimal site for realizing balanced national public medical services.’

They explained, “The area around 459 Jaeun-dong, Jinhae-gu is a 32,420㎡ national public land owned by the Ministry of National Defense and can be utilized as national property,” adding, “It is possible to exchange and connect with the nearby Naval Maritime Medical Center.”

They also said, “Within a 20 km radius of the site, the population includes 1.03 million in Changwon Special City, 550,000 in Gimhae City, and 150,000 in Gangseo-gu, Busan, which will satisfy medical demand.”

They highlighted accessibility by mentioning the urban planning road connecting Jaeun 3 District to Pungho-dong, a 1.26 km section adjacent to the Maritime Medical Center, the Second Anmin Tunnel, the road opened last year between Seokdong and Sosa, and the roads under construction between Guigok and Haengam.

They added, “It will also alleviate the sense of alienation felt by police officers working in non-metropolitan areas at five police stations including the Namhae Maritime Police Agency, Changwon Maritime Police Station, and Tongyeong Maritime Police Station.”

The lawmakers said, “The establishment of the National Police Hospital branch is a project promoted by the National Police Agency to provide balanced public medical services concentrated in the metropolitan area,” and “Jinhae-gu, Changwon City more than fulfills the policy and purpose of providing public medical services.”

The branch of the Police Hospital is planned to be established with 23 medical departments including an emergency medicine center and a health promotion center, and a capacity of 550 beds.

The National Police Agency selected Jinhae-gu, Changwon City in Gyeongnam, Hwawon-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu City, and Chosa-dong, Asan City, Chungnam as the first candidates among 19 local governments that applied as candidate sites, and conducted an on-site inspection in Jinhae-gu on the 24th.

All three candidate sites will be inspected this month, followed by a second evaluation, and the final construction site will be decided within this year.
