[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] As the global online video service (OTT) offensive intensifies, the domestic paid broadcasting industry is gathering to find sustainable growth measures.
The Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association announced on the 28th that it will hold the "4th Sustainable Media Ecosystem Conference GeMeCon 2022" at Conrad Seoul in Yeouido.
GeMeCon, an event prepared to explore sustainable growth measures for the rapidly changing domestic media industry, is being held for the fourth time since its first session in 2019.
The conference will open with an opening address by Yoon Do-han, chairman of the Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association, and a congratulatory speech by Park Yoon-kyu, 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT.
In the morning session, an IPTV commendation ceremony will be held for media industry officials who have contributed to the development and win-win cooperation of paid broadcasting over the past year. Sixteen recipients will be awarded the Minister of Science and ICT Commendation, the Korea PP Association Chairman’s Award, and the Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association Chairman’s Award.
Following this, Kim Hyuk, Head of Media CO at SK Broadband, will present on "Content Ecosystem, Sustainable Development Measures - !PICK." He will introduce the joint business strategies of IPTV operators to strengthen paid broadcasting competitiveness, including joint content procurement.
In the afternoon conference, two presentations will be made on "The Era of Media Chaos, Institutional Pre-Tasks for Overcoming the Crisis of Paid Broadcasting."
The first presentation will be given by No Chang-hee, Research Fellow at the Digital Industry Policy Institute, under the theme "What Should Be Prioritized in Institutional Improvements to Strengthen Paid Broadcasting Competitiveness?" He will examine the characteristics and issues of the domestic paid broadcasting market and policies, and analyze policy tasks and expected effects for strengthening paid broadcasting competitiveness.
The second presentation will be by Choi Woo-jung, Professor of Police Administration at Keimyung University, on "How Should the Broadcasting and Communications Development Fund Change for the Promotion of Broadcasting and Communications?" He will review the issues raised regarding the Broadcasting and Communications Development Fund in response to changes in the media ecosystem.
The comprehensive discussion, moderated by Moon Cheol-soo, Professor of Media, Video, Advertising, and Public Relations at Hanshin University, will include ▲Kim Jung-hyun, Professor of Media at Korea University ▲Ji Sung-wook, Professor of Media Communication at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies ▲Hong Jong-yoon, BK Professor of Journalism and Communication at Seoul National University ▲Lee Jong-kwan, Senior Specialist at Sejong Law Firm ▲and Lee Sang-kyung, Head of Policy Planning Center at Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association. They will discuss institutional pre-tasks for a sustainable media ecosystem.
Yoon Do-han, chairman of the Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association, said, "During the four sessions of GeMeCon, the media ecosystem has changed rapidly at a pace even experts did not anticipate," adding, "Without consideration of the ecosystem, it is difficult for the entire paid broadcasting industry to survive, and the IPTV industry is also fiercely contemplating survival strategies." Chairman Yoon emphasized, "In order to protect our media ecosystem amid the global OTT offensive, prompt institutional reforms are absolutely necessary," and expressed hope that "GeMeCon will function as a venue for the development and leap forward of the entire domestic media industry."
