The Korea Communications Commission Shares Spam Data with 13 Organizations

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) announced on the 25th that it held the ‘2022 Spam Data Opening Performance Sharing Meeting’ for institutions cooperating in spam data opening, together with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA).

Considering that spam is being exploited as bait for various crimes such as illegal loans, gambling, and voice phishing, the KCC and KISA have built a cooperative system since 2020 to share spam data with 13 institutions including the National Police Agency, Korea Racing Authority, and Financial Supervisory Service.

They have analyzed approximately 40 million spam data entries annually to provide customized information needed by demand institutions.

At this event, marking the third year of spam data opening, they shared cases of spam data utilization and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between institutions.

The main contents of the spam data utilization cases presented that day included ▲Current status of spam data opening (KISA) ▲Eradication of illegal gambling sites using spam data (Gambling Industry Integrated Supervision Commission) ▲Achievements in responding to telephone financial fraud spam (Gangwon Police Agency) ▲Monitoring of telecommunications market including subscription solicitation and exaggerated advertising (Korea Information and Communications Promotion Association) ▲Joint public-private online illegal drug inspection (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety).

Kim Jae-cheol, Director of the User Policy Bureau at KCC, said, “The presentations on spam data utilization cases from each institution were very helpful in improving the existing sharing system and planning new collaboration models,” adding, “The KCC and KISA plan to continue expanding and strengthening data opening to encourage various public-private spam response activities.”
