[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A newborn baby in a maternity ward in Zaporizhzhia, southern Ukraine, managed by the Russian military attack, has died.
According to foreign media including AFP on the 23rd (local time), the Ukrainian emergency rescue team reported via Telegram that "the hospital in Vilniansk, located in the south of Zaporizhzhia, was hit by a rocket attack overnight, destroying the two-story maternity ward."
According to the rescue team, newborns, mothers, and doctors were in the ward at the time of the attack. The rescue team stated that the mother and doctor were rescued from the building debris, but the baby born two days ago passed away.
Russian military attacks targeting civilian facilities such as hospitals continue repeatedly. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, a total of 703 attacks on Ukrainian medical facilities have been recorded.
Earlier in March, a maternity hospital in Mariupol was bombed, resulting in three deaths including children and 17 injuries. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense denied attacking the site and claimed that the photos reported in the media were fabricated.
Recently, Russia has been conducting intensive airstrikes on civilian infrastructure such as power plants, hospitals, schools, and shelters in major Ukrainian cities. On the same day, two civilians died in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, due to Russian airstrikes. Oleg Synegubov, governor of the region, stated, "Around 7:40 a.m., Kupiansk was shelled," adding, "A nine-story residential building and a clinic were destroyed. Unfortunately, a 55-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man died."
As civilian casualties increase, the international community is taking measures such as designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. Following the submission of a resolution in the U.S. Congress to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, the European Union (EU) Parliament also passed a resolution on the 23rd to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
The European Parliament criticized in the resolution that "Russia's deliberate attacks and atrocities against Ukrainian civilians, destruction of civilian infrastructure, and other serious human rights violations and breaches of international human rights law constitute acts of terrorism."
