"Establishing Safety Manuals Suitable for Research Institutes"

[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] Lotte Chemical's Basic Materials Research Institute received an award in the institutional category of the 'Laboratory Safety Meritorious Person' program, hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Safety Headquarters, marking the first recognition in the petrochemical industry.
According to Lotte Chemical on the 22nd, at the awards ceremony held the previous day at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Daejeon, Hwang Minjae, head of the Lotte Chemical Research Institute, received the award as the institute's representative.
The Laboratory Safety Meritorious Person award is given to universities, research institutions, and outstanding managers who have actively contributed to improving laboratory safety culture and preventing safety accidents. The award has been presented since 2015 to raise social awareness of laboratory safety management and promote public safety consciousness.
Director Hwang stated, "Lotte Chemical's Basic Materials Research Institute is making various efforts for safety, including establishing safety manuals tailored to the institute, improving work environments and facilities," and added, "All members of the research institute will practice even small actions to become the safest research institute."
Established in 1986, the Lotte Chemical Research Institute serves as the company's R&D hub, continuously conducting research to secure core technologies and develop future business technologies. The Basic Materials Research Institute has established a laboratory safety environment management system by acquiring safety, health, and environmental certification systems, and from 2018 to 2021, three laboratories each year were certified as excellent safety management laboratories by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
To date, a total of 14 laboratories have been certified. In 2019, the CID2 Laboratory (Basic Chemical Process Laboratory) was selected as the best laboratory and received a commendation from the Minister of Science and ICT. This year, the BM Evaluation Laboratory (Battery Materials Evaluation Laboratory) was selected as the best laboratory and received an award from the Director of the National Research Safety Management Headquarters. In 2020, the institute obtained integrated certification for ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System).
