Beijing University of Technology Research Team Uses Cars on Land and Drones When Flight Is Needed
Expected to Be Useful in Mountainous Areas Upon Commercialization
[Asia Economy Senior Reporter Jo Young-shin] A new mode of transportation combining automobiles and flying cars has been developed in China.
On the 19th, according to Chinese media such as People's Daily Online, researchers from Chongqing City and Beijing University of Technology unveiled the world's first 2-seater detachable flying car prototype.
This prototype consists of a drone powered by rotary wings and a ground-driven chassis (car). It can operate on regular roads, and when aerial movement is needed, the ground-driven chassis and drone separate. It is explained that both flying and driving are possible.
Chinese media reported that the takeoff weight of the detachable flying car is 650 kg, allowing it to carry two passengers and cargo while traveling at speeds up to 80 km/h.
They also added that the separation and docking of the drone and car are automatically controlled, and when switching to flight mode, it can autonomously drive to the destination.
Chinese media stated that once commercialized, the prototype will be useful in mountainous cities and other areas.
The Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau said it plans to actively support the commercialization of this prototype and promised follow-up assistance.
Jang Jinhwa, Secretary of the China Automotive Engineering Society, said, "The intelligent detachable flying car is a system integrating land and air, which will further promote technological innovation in flying cars."
