Interim Report Meeting on the Development Project of 'Gangsso Research and Development Special Zone' in Gumi, Gyeongbuk Gumi City Hall.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] On the 18th, Gumi City held an interim report and meeting on the Gyeongbuk Gumi Small Giant R&D Special Zone Development Project at Kumoh National Institute of Technology, attended by about 20 officials including Kim Jang-ho, Mayor of Gumi, Kwak Ho-sang, President of Kumoh National Institute of Technology, and Yoon Chang-bae, Head of the Gyeongbuk Regional Headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation.

At this meeting, they conducted a mid-term review of the achievements of the Gyeongbuk Gumi Small Giant R&D Special Zone Development Project and discussed the project promotion direction and mutual cooperation plans among the three institutions: Gumi City, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, and Korea Industrial Complex Corporation.

The Gyeongbuk Gumi Small Giant R&D Special Zone is a project that creates an R&D special zone by utilizing excellent scientific and technological capabilities centered on the region's core technology institutions, and revitalizes the local industry through technology transfer and commercialization.

The special zone was designated by the Ministry of Science and ICT in July 2020. The total area is 2.57㎢ (about 780,000 pyeong), with Kumoh National Institute of Technology as the core technology institution, and is being developed with Kumoh Technovalley, Gumi National Industrial Complex 4th District and its expansion district, and Gumi High-Tech Valley as the hinterland areas.

The Gyeongbuk Gumi Small Giant R&D Special Zone Development Project supports the entire cycle of public technology commercialization through various projects such as public technology transfer and commercialization, establishment of research institute companies, support for R&BD tasks, fostering technology startups, cultivating innovation networks, and supporting the growth of regionally specialized companies.

Over the past two years, it has produced excellent results including 71 technology transfers, establishment of 19 research institute companies, support for 22 technology transfer commercialization projects, 22 new startups, and investment linkage of approximately 4.4 billion KRW.

Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, “To proactively respond to the rapid changes in the internal and external industrial environment, we have promoted the Small Giant R&D Special Zone Development Project based on the regional science and technology infrastructure,” adding, “If Gumi City, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, and Korea Industrial Complex Corporation combine their respective capabilities to lead regional industrial innovation, it will create many synergistic effects such as revitalizing the local economy, creating jobs, and increasing the population.”
