Sigma Day Math-Sum (MATH-SUM) Tour with Residents, LED Display Unveiling Ceremony... Various Experiential Programs and Exhibition Interpretations to Enhance Mathematical Thinking... 3rd Anniversary of Math Culture Center, 130,000 Cumulative Users Over 3 Years Leading Math Popularization... Geumcheon Science Cube Operates Creative Science Experiences for Digitally Disadvantaged Groups
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Nowon-gu (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) will hold 'Sigma Day,' a community event, on the 19th to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Nowon Math Culture Center.
The Nowon Math Culture Center, established in 2019 as the first of its kind among basic local governments nationwide, was created to popularize math culture and link various educational programs through an experiential learning center. Over the past three years, it has received great support from residents, with a cumulative user count exceeding 130,000.
To commemorate the 3rd anniversary, Sigma Day will feature the experiential math festival MATH-SUM tour, an LED electronic display unveiling ceremony, and a celebratory performance.
First, the MATH-SUM tour will be held indoors at the Math Culture Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the 19th. It is designed to help participants understand mathematical principles and develop interest in math through various hands-on experiences.
Professional instructors will operate each experience booth, offering diverse programs to enhance mathematical thinking skills. Participants can enjoy math as if traveling by collecting stamps on a stamp ticket received upon entry, stamping at each booth when starting the experience.
Through activities such as ‘Making a Tessellation Eco Bag,’ which helps understand the principle of tessellation by combining and moving shapes, ‘Making a Constellation Mood Lamp,’ which explains the definition and properties of regular polyhedra, and ‘Making a Pom-pom Crown,’ which helps understand the composition and number of shapes, math?often perceived as difficult?can be approached easily and enjoyably.
Additionally, there will be a ‘Math Explanation’ session led by a professional math commentator from the Math Culture Center and a ‘3D Pen Experience’ where participants can create glasses using a 3D pen.
Admission to the Math Culture Center and participation in the MATH-SUM tour are free and open to anyone entering during operating hours without prior reservation. However, paid crafting booths are available on a first-come, first-served basis for 400 participants, with a fee of 1,000 KRW per experience. All proceeds will be donated.
From 1 p.m., a large LED electronic display unveiling ceremony and celebratory performance will take place. The newly installed LED display at the main entrance of the Math Culture Center will be revealed to residents, and through the ‘Music Artist’ team, one of the center’s popular programs ‘Math + Music = Healing’ will present beautiful classical performances to celebrate the 3rd anniversary with the community.
Meanwhile, the Nowon Math Culture Center, established as a landmark of the educational city Nowon, spans a total area of 2,885㎡ with one basement floor and four above-ground floors. It offers various math-related content tailored by age group, enabling elementary, middle, and high school students as well as parents to easily understand and enjoy math through experiential learning.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, stated, “The Nowon Math Culture Center has become a representative facility of the educational city Nowon. We will continue to provide better educational programs for local children and students and promote the popularization of math by advancing various projects centered on the Nowon Math Culture Center.”
Geumcheon-gu (District Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon) operates ‘Geumcheon Visiting Science Cube (Geumchajsa),’ a program that brings creative science programs directly to groups with limited access to science culture.
‘Geumcheon Visiting Science Cube’ runs customized programs tailored to the characteristics and levels of participating institutions, targeting users of local facilities such as centers for the disabled, senior facilities, youth shelters, and multicultural centers until December 9.
For the Geumcheon Eoullim Welfare Center, a welfare facility for the disabled, one-on-one assistants will be provided to ensure smooth experiences and increase satisfaction.
The program involves about 150 participants from five institutions: Geumcheon Senior Club, Geumcheon Hoam Senior Welfare Center, Geumcheon Eoullim Welfare Center, Seoul Metropolitan Youth Short-term Shelter, and Geumcheon Global Village Center.
Participants will enjoy healing content such as ‘Making My Own Mechanical Pencil’ using a small woodworking machine called Unimat, ‘Making LED Acrylic Mood Lamps’ themed on the principles of light, ‘Making Square Traditional Mood Lamps,’ and ‘Making Christmas Decoration Mirrors,’ aimed at those with limited cultural activities.
Alongside the experiential programs, from December 5 to 9, a ‘Trick Art in Science’ exhibition themed on ‘Optics and Illusions’ will be held in the lobby of Geumcheon-gu Office. The exhibition will display works that create optical illusions, install photo zones that make flat surfaces appear three-dimensional, and hold photo events.
Yoo Sung-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “We aim to provide fun experiential activities reflecting 4th Industrial Revolution technologies to digitally marginalized groups with limited outdoor activities. We plan to explore various measures to ensure future-oriented science education is universally and continuously accessible without blind spots.”
