[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Hyundai Motor Group held an event to share the research and development directions and current status of technology development in related fields such as autonomous driving, vehicle control, and infotainment with developers, in line with its transition to an SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle) development system.
Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 17th that it successfully concluded the '2nd HMG Developer Conference,' where developers and university (graduate) students in the future mobility sector shared the experiences and know-how of Hyundai Motor Group developers.
Now in its second year, the HMG Developer Conference is significant as it was the first time since Hyundai Motor Group announced its SDV vision in October that the detailed R&D process and core technologies were specifically disclosed by the R&D executives and staff.
In particular, key technologies essential for future mobility development were extensively revealed, including ▲deep learning-based LiDAR recognition autonomous driving technology ▲software internalization of centralized platform controllers ▲and driving algorithms for service robots.
The event was held over two days, from the 16th to the 17th, through both online and offline channels. A total of 70 R&D executives and staff from ▲Hyundai Motor Company ▲Kia ▲Hyundai AutoEver ▲42dot, and startups collaborating with Hyundai Motor Group (Coconut Silo, Mbiome) participated as presenters.
On the first day, the 16th, Hyundai Motor Group executives and developers gave presentations on vehicle software technology development at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang.
Presenters included Song Changhyun, President in charge of Hyundai Motor Group’s Global Software Center and TaaS Division; Jang Woongjun, Executive Vice President of the Autonomous Driving Division; Kim Chikyung, Senior Vice President of the Vehicle Control Strategy Office; Ahn Hyunggi, Senior Vice President of the Electronics Development Office; and Kim Sungwoon, Senior Vice President of Hyundai AutoEver’s SW Quality Innovation Division, among other leaders and development practitioners in their respective fields.
President Song Changhyun said, “Hyundai Motor Group is focusing on software development to provide a comprehensive user experience for future mobility, including acquiring 42dot and establishing the Global Software Center. We expect to realize the group’s SDV vision by continuously recruiting excellent developers and fostering a developer culture through the annual HMG Developer Conference.”
During the Q&A sessions following each presentation, enthusiastic questions related to the presentation topics continued. Attendees asked in-depth questions related to their research fields, such as development methodologies, vehicle security, and the relationship between technology and marketability. The executives and practitioners in charge of the presentations actively communicated with attendees by answering based on their research experiences.
After the presentations, Hyundai Motor Group arranged a networking session to bring together developers and HR personnel present on-site, allowing for in-depth discussions related to SDV research and development.
On the second day, the 17th, Hyundai Motor Group developers communicated with participants on various topics such as ▲autonomous driving ▲infotainment ▲data science ▲artificial intelligence ▲car cloud ▲electronics and body through an online Q&A session.
Additionally, Hyundai Motor Group posted recruitment announcements related to the presentation topics on the developer conference website and held a recruitment briefing session for participants wishing to join Hyundai Motor Group through real-time online consultations.
A Hyundai Motor Group official stated, “We were able to confirm strong interest from software developers regarding the group’s SDV development status. Going forward, we will continue to strengthen the group’s software capabilities and create a better culture and environment for developers.”
The 2nd HMG Developer Conference can be viewed by anyone through the official event website or Hyundai Motor Group’s official YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group has been making multifaceted efforts to strengthen and internalize software technology capabilities, including holding the event ‘Opening the Future of Mobility with Software’ in October, announcing the transition to an SDV development system amid accelerating competition to lead the future mobility era.
