[Asia Economy Reporter Bora Lee] A husband in Texas, USA, has been charged for giving his wife abortion pills. Recently, several media outlets including The Washington Post and The Guardian reported that Mason Herring, a lawyer living in Houston, Texas, was indicted earlier this month on serious charges including assaulting a pregnant woman and coercing an abortion.

According to the reports, in March, Herring gave his wife, A, who was in early pregnancy, water mixed with abortion pills, telling her, "You need to drink a lot of water during pregnancy." At the time, A pointed out that the water looked cloudy, but Herring allegedly excused it by saying, "The pipes might be dirty, so the water is murky."

After drinking the water, A experienced seizures and severe bleeding symptoms, and was rushed to the emergency room. She began to suspect that her husband had mixed abortion pills into the water and refused to drink what he gave her.

On April 20, to verify her suspicions, A invited two acquaintances to her home, where her husband was staying separately. On that day, Herring again offered her something to drink, and A and the two acquaintances immediately sensed that the water was cloudy.

Later, A directly witnessed Herring pouring a substance from a small plastic bag into the beverage. It was confirmed that the substance was a drug containing misoprostol, known to induce abortion.

Herring reportedly gave A water and drinks mixed with abortion pills more than seven times. Despite Herring's attempts to induce an abortion, A gave birth to a healthy child.

Investigations revealed that Herring had sent multiple text messages expressing unhappiness about A's pregnancy. Herring was arrested in May and released on a $30,000 (approximately 39.64 million KRW) bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on the 2nd of next month.

Meanwhile, the Herring couple had been married for 11 years and have two children aged 2 and 6. However, their relationship grew distant over time, and they began couples therapy in February. During this period, they learned of A's pregnancy, to which Herring reportedly reacted negatively.
