KCC Holds First International OTT Event... Discussing K-OTT Support and International Cooperation

[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] The Korea Communications Commission and the Korea Broadcast Advertising Corporation (KOBACO) held the 1st 'International OTT Forum' on the 16th at the Federation of Korean Industries building in Yeouido. This is the first global online video service (OTT) event held in Korea.


The event was held under the theme of 'Leap Toward the Future.' Its purpose is to support the overseas expansion of domestic OTT operators and to establish global cooperation systems both domestically and internationally.


Professor Amanda Lotz from Queensland University of Technology in Australia opened the forum with a keynote speech titled 'The Evolving OTT Ecosystem.' In the following sessions, presentations were given by Katherine Park, Head of Asia Business at Paramount; Lewis Boswell, Chairman of the Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA); Pasuthree Hirun, Secretary-General of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand; Tawei Chen, CEO of LiTV in Taiwan; Brian Fuller, Vice President of AC Nielsen in the United States; and Ki-joo Kim, Executive Director of Korea Research.


The final discussion session was held under the theme 'What is Needed for the Sustainable Growth of K-OTT.' Professor Heon-yul Lee of Korea University, who gave the presentation, stated, "In the evolution of OTT platforms, actively exploring issues related to content procurement, capital, subscribers, and data strategies is key to the development of domestic OTT services." Professor Cheolsu Moon of Hanshin University, president of the Korea OTT Forum, chaired the session, with panelists including Hee-joo Lee, Head of Policy Planning at Content Wave; Changnam Ko, Director of External Cooperation at TVING; Minjin Jang, Director at iUeno; and Dr. Jason Besherface from the UK.


In his opening remarks, Chairman Sang-hyuk Han of the Korea Communications Commission said, "I hope that today's international forum will serve as a stepping stone for the joint development of the global OTT industry and international cooperation," adding, "The KCC will continue to show unwavering interest and support to enhance international understanding of OTT and to further strengthen cooperative relationships."
