Gurye-gun Office Women's Ssireum Team Launches Talent Donation with 'Visiting Ssireum Class'

[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yuk Miseok] The women's Ssireum team of Gurye County Office has embarked on a talent donation project by conducting a visiting Ssireum class for all students of Gurye Girls' Middle School.

The Ssireum team operated the Ssireum class for two days, from November 14 to 15, targeting all students (8 classes, 170 students) of Gurye Girls' Middle School, in collaboration with the Gurye Bandalgom Ssireum Sports Club.

On the first day, November 14, five classes attended the lessons from the 2nd to the 6th period, and on the 15th, lessons were conducted for three classes.

On November 14, the 'Visiting Ssireum Class' was led mainly by Kim Songhwan, the coach of the Gurye County Women's Ssireum Team, with players from the Gurye County Women's Ssireum Team and full-time coaches and players from the Gurye Bandalgom Ssireum Sports Club participating as mentors.

The mentors showcased impressive Ssireum techniques such as Andari, Batdari, and Deulbaejigi at the center of the stage, eliciting admiration from the students.

On that day, the students wore the satba (belt) themselves and learned how to hold the satba, various Ssireum techniques, and Ssireum etiquette through one-on-one lessons, and also had time to apply the techniques during practice matches among themselves.

Kim Sunho, the county governor, said, "Ssireum is a unique cultural heritage of our nation and is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is necessary to activate Ssireum as a community sport and nurture successors by providing local students with opportunities to experience our cultural heritage," adding, "We will continue to operate the Ssireum classes."

Meanwhile, the Ssireum class has been conducted for three years since 2020 to nurture successors and expand the base of Ssireum. This year, it is linked with the Gurye Bandalgom Ssireum Sports Club, a school-type single-sport (Ssireum) club selected in last year's public contest, focusing on discovering student athletes.
