[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] On the 8th (local time), Chuck Schumer, the U.S. Senate Majority Leader, secured his fifth term in the U.S. midterm elections held on November 8.
The New York Times (NYT) reported that in the New York State U.S. Senate race, Schumer won with 56.4% of the vote, defeating candidate Joe Pinion, who received 42.6%, confirming his victory.
NYT explained that with Schumer’s successful fifth term, he set the record as the longest-serving senator from New York State.
At a recent debate hosted by Spectrum News, Schumer criticized, "Pinion is an excellent politician but a failed senator."
Schumer began his political career in 1974 by running for the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, and over 48 years, he rose from the House to the Senate, reaching the pinnacle of power without ever losing an election, CNN evaluated.
Schumer previously set a record with nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party successfully defended its stronghold in the New York gubernatorial election, blocking the 'Red Wave' (Republican surge).
As of 11:55 PM that day, with 79% of votes counted, incumbent Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul led Republican candidate and U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin with 54.2% to 45.8%, maintaining a relatively stable margin.
