[Asia Economy Reporter Han Yeju] A worker in his 20s died in an accident at a Samsung Electronics partner company in the Gwangju area. The police are investigating whether there was a violation of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
According to Samsung Electronics and related industries on the 8th, at around 9:14 p.m. the previous day, Mr. A, in his mid-20s, was crushed by a steel coil weighing about 1.8 tons at DK, an electronics manufacturer located in Pyeong-dong Industrial Complex, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. The company has 225 employees, with more than 50 regular workers, making it subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. The Act, which has been in effect since January this year, stipulates that if an industrial accident occurs at a workplace with 50 or more employees, the employer or management responsible for failing to fulfill prevention duties can be sentenced to imprisonment of one year or more or fined up to 1 billion KRW.
The police plan to file charges such as involuntary manslaughter if the responsible party is identified after accurately determining the circumstances of the accident. The labor authorities will investigate whether there was a violation of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
This company is a Samsung Electronics partner that produces air home appliances, household appliance parts, automotive exterior parts, and develops and manufactures precision press molds.
