[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] On the 5th, the number of new COVID-19 cases reached the 40,000 range.


The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on that day, 40,903 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 25,801,564.


This is 2,546 fewer than the previous day's 43,449 cases but maintained the 40,000 range for three consecutive days. Compared to a week ago on the 29th of last month, when there were 37,312 cases, it increased by 3,591, and compared to two weeks ago on the 22nd of last month, when there were 26,893 cases, it increased by 14,010. It is the highest number for a Saturday in seven weeks.


Among the new confirmed cases, 57 were imported cases, which is 8 more than the previous day. Domestic community transmission cases numbered 40,846.


The number of confirmed cases by region (including imported cases) is as follows: Gyeonggi 11,761, Seoul 8,104, Incheon 2,411, Gyeongbuk 2,243, Busan 1,974, Gyeongnam 1,859, Daegu 1,797, Chungnam 1,702, Gangwon 1,555, Chungbuk 1,407, Daejeon 1,366, Jeonbuk 1,227, Jeonnam 1,140, Gwangju 975, Ulsan 745, Sejong 366, Jeju 242, Quarantine 29.


The number of critically ill patients increased by 10 from the previous day to 314. The number of deaths due to COVID-19 the previous day was 41, which is 6 more than the day before. The cumulative number of deaths is 29,354, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.11%.
