Helped Rescue Ship Dragged by Typhoon... [Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] On September 6th, when Typhoon Hinnamnor, the 11th typhoon, made landfall in the Gyeongnam region, a vessel seeking shelter in Gohyeon Bay, Geoje City, was trapped in the storm.

The 988-ton barge, tossed about by the strong winds brought by the typhoon, experienced "jumo" (走錨), known as anchor dragging.

The heavy anchor, which keeps the ship in place, was being dragged helplessly by winds reaching a maximum speed of 30 meters per second and turbulent currents.

Although the vessel was at risk of drifting from a safe area into a dangerous zone, the severe weather made it difficult even for patrol boats to respond and dispatch urgently.

The Changwon Coast Guard requested tugboat support from Geoje Samsung Heavy Industries.

Along with a tugboat from Geoje Samsung Heavy Industries, the Changwon Coast Guard rushed to the scene, swiftly moved the vessel to a safe area, and rescued one crew member on board.

Anchor dragging occurred two more times afterward. Each time, Samsung Heavy Industries shared real-time information with the Changwon Coast Guard through their own control equipment and cameras, and also provided assistance during the approach of Typhoon Nanmadol, the 14th typhoon.

On the 2nd, the Changwon Coast Guard presented letters of appreciation to three officials, including Executive Director Bae Hyun-geun of Geoje Samsung Heavy Industries, who actively cooperated in responding to the typhoon situation.

Chief Ryu Yong-hwan said, “We are grateful for the joint efforts to protect citizens' safety amid the crises caused directly and indirectly by two typhoons in the southern sea area this year,” adding, “Since Jinhae and Gohyeon Bay are the largest typhoon shelter areas nationwide, accommodating up to 200 vessels, we will continue to strengthen public-private cooperation to establish a more thorough maritime safety network.”
