The popularity of cream bread, beloved by all ages, reached new heights with CU convenience store's Yonsei Milk Cream Bread. It’s not the long, oval-shaped cream bread you’d find at a neighborhood bakery, nor is it the kind you’d see on supermarket shelves. This cream bread has claimed its own space in the dessert section and is kept refrigerated. It has sparked a buying frenzy, appeared countless times on YouTube and social media, and attracted widespread attention. Naturally, other convenience stores began to launch similar products. We decided there was no better topic for Drinkit's feature series, [Drinkit Pick]. We set out to thoroughly investigate the differences among three products: CU's Yonsei Milk Cream Bread, GS25's Breadique, and Emart24's Bangbang Donut. While there are various flavors such as chocolate and strawberry, we chose the original (milk) flavor, which is both basic and common to all three.

CU Yonsei Milk

The rising star among convenience store cream breads, CU's Yonsei Milk was the first one we tasted. It was so popular that Drinkit even did a separate review of all three Yonsei Milk flavors. If you're curious about the details, click here! The cream has a texture that's right in the middle-not too runny, not too firm. You can taste the milk flavor, but it’s not overpowering. One advantage is that, despite the amount of cream, it doesn’t feel too heavy. The chewy bread texture is surprisingly good, even though it’s kept refrigerated. You can even freeze it and still enjoy the chewiness-making it a refreshing treat, almost like ice cream. Some people do notice a faint, yeasty flavor typical of mass-produced bread, so keep that in mind.

GS25 Breadique

Next up is GS25's Breadique. The first thing that stood out when cutting the bread in half was the cream's texture. It looks just like the whipped cream melting on top of honey bread at a cafe. The cream is glossy and somewhat runny, but also a bit heavy. The taste is almost identical to the long cream breads sold at neighborhood bakeries. If you prefer lighter cream over something rich, this is the one for you. The bread itself is quite dry, so you’ll want to have some milk or coffee on hand. At GS25, the Maritozzo might actually be a better choice...

Emart24 Bangbang Donut

Unlike the previous two, Emart24's Bangbang Donut is labeled as a "donut." Its small size is obvious at a glance, and splitting it in half reveals the smallest amount of cream, which was a bit disappointing. But! The moment you take a bite, the aroma of vanilla bean comes through, and the sweetness is rich and pronounced. Neither the cream nor the bread feels like a typical convenience store product. The taste is very similar to donuts sold at specialty donut shops. Compared to the other two, this one is especially enjoyable as a dessert.
