[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Wook] Following the Itaewon tragedy in Seoul, Uiryeong County in Gyeongnam abruptly canceled the 'Youth Unity Festival' on the day of the event.
O Tae-wan, the mayor of Uiryeong County, said, "The shock to the entire nation is immense," adding, "People are more important than the festival, and we express our condolences to the victims of the tragedy together with the residents."
Earlier on the morning of the 30th, following President Yoon Seok-yeol's announcement of a national mourning period, Uiryeong County also announced its decision to cancel the event.
Uiryeong County had originally planned to hold the 'Uiryeong County Youth Unity Festival,' which takes place during the Rich Rich Festival period, at Seodong Life Park at 6 p.m. on the 30th.
Mayor O Tae-wan held an emergency safety meeting that morning and urgently ordered the cancellation of the youth event, stating, "An unthinkable tragedy and disaster have occurred, and the youth casualties are severe."
Uiryeong County will cancel not only the 'Youth Unity Festival,' which included youth talent shows and invited singer performances, but all performance events. On the final day of the festival, the 30th, the festival will be quietly concluded focusing on experience and exhibition events.
