Ten Performance Improvement Projects for Small Tactical Vehicles to Be Launched Starting Next Year
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] The large transport helicopter Chinook (CH-47D) will undergo a full-scale improvement project starting next year.
According to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) on the 26th, through the "Large Transport Helicopter Aircraft Combat Efficiency Improvement" project, they plan to upgrade 10 items, including installing M60 machine gun mounts on the Chinook helicopter and remodeling its interior.
In addition, DAPA held the "Existing Force Performance Maximization Project Promotion Committee" and selected 10 projects out of 42 applications received from each military branch by March this year as targets for next year's projects. The purpose of this project is to rapidly upgrade the performance of weapon systems with declining operational rates due to aging within two years. Typically, weapon system performance improvement projects take 3 to 5 years.
Also selected were projects to enhance the detection capability of the Air Force ballistic missile surveillance radar and improve the cooling system operation software, install front auxiliary mirrors and 3D around-view systems on Army small tactical vehicles, and increase safety by installing front, rear, and side surveillance cameras on armored combat vehicles of the Army and Marine Corps. Additionally, projects include improving the safety of ribbon bridge transport vehicles, upgrading semiconductor transceiver assemblies of frigate (FFG-I) search radars, and enhancing the performance of underwater unmanned exploration vehicles (ROV) on rescue ships.
Furthermore, projects were selected to improve the performance of integrated engine monitoring and control systems on destroyers (DDH-II), improve engine monitoring and control systems on destroyers (DDH-I), and enhance the operational efficiency of K-series tank small unit tactical simulation training equipment (TMPS).
A budget of 30.2 billion KRW has been allocated for these projects in the government budget plan for next year.
