Despite Enforcement of Serious Accident Punishment Act... 50% Increase in On-Site Deaths at Top 100 Construction Companies in Q3 [Image source=Yonhap News]


[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] A total of 61 fatalities occurred at construction sites in the third quarter of this year. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) has decided to conduct special inspections on large construction companies and related subcontractors where fatal accidents occurred by December.


On the 26th, MOLIT disclosed the list of the top 100 construction companies by construction capability evaluation, related subcontractors, ordering agencies, and local governments where fatal construction accidents occurred in the third quarter of 2022.


A total of 14 of the top 100 construction companies experienced fatal accidents. D.L.E&C, Daewoo E&C, Gyeryong Construction Industry, and Hoban Industry each had 2 fatalities, totaling 8 deaths. Ten other companies, including Hyundai Engineering, each had 1 fatality, totaling 10 deaths.


In particular, D.L.E&C, ranked 3rd in construction capability evaluation, recorded fatal accidents for four consecutive quarters. Four accidents occurred in March, April, August, and October, resulting in 5 deaths. The subcontractors related to fatal accidents among the top 100 construction companies include 15 companies such as Ansong Construction, Line Gongyoung, Ecofran, and Seungju Construction.


There were 20 public project ordering agencies where fatal accidents occurred in the third quarter this year. The number of deaths was 22, an increase of 2 compared to the same period last year. At the site of the Gyeonggi Anyang Naengcheon District Improvement Project ordered by Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation, 2 fatalities occurred.


The number of fatalities in private projects was 39, a decrease of 7 compared to the same period last year. The licensing authority with the highest number of fatalities was Asan City, with 3 deaths.


MOLIT plans to conduct special inspections on large construction companies and related subcontractors where fatal accidents occurred in the third quarter by December.


In particular, for companies with a high frequency of accidents such as D.L.E&C, which had fatal accidents for four consecutive quarters, MOLIT announced that it will conduct focused and thorough inspections by increasing inspection personnel.
