[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangwon Province has begun exploring ways to utilize 'workcation,' a customized work and travel trend for remote and telecommuting workers that surged after the COVID-19 pandemic, as a strategy to attract tourists and businesses.
'Workcation' is a portmanteau of 'Work' and 'Vacation,' highly favored by MZ generation office workers, and is gaining attention from companies as an excellent method for employee welfare, talent acquisition, and improving work efficiency.
In particular, Gangwon Province boasts a pristine natural environment, a pleasant work atmosphere, and diverse tourism and leisure resources. With dramatically improved accessibility to the metropolitan area, it is regarded as an ideal region for 'workcation.'
On the 17th, Gangwon Governor Kim Jin-tae revealed this plan for revitalizing the Gangwon economy at a press conference, emphasizing, "As a new trend and genre, it will attract tourists to Gangwon Province and further become a trend for attracting businesses."
Earlier, on the 13th, Governor Kim personally presented under the theme "Gangwon Workcation, an Office by the Sea" at the '2022 Gangwon Workcation Day' held at SJ Kunsthalle in Seoul.
Having previously announced plans to "train 10,000 semiconductor personnel" and "establish the Wonju Semiconductor Cluster," Governor Kim stressed, "One of the success factors of Silicon Valley in the U.S. is its pleasant natural environment. Similarly, Gangwon Province, with its clean and comfortable environment, has ample potential to grow into Korea's Silicon Valley."
He continued, "Just as the California state government actively supported startups in Silicon Valley's early days, Gangwon Province will focus on creating favorable conditions for attracting and nurturing businesses alongside the launch of the special autonomous province."
On the day of 'Workcation Day,' the province signed business agreements with seven companies to promote Gangwon workcation and agreed to provide various content to enable corporate employees to conveniently participate in 'workcation.'
A B2B briefing session among companies, tourism businesses, and local governments was also held, where over 70 companies and 12 cities and counties within the province presented cases of workcation initiatives by local governments and companies and conducted B2B booth consultations.
The province plans to operate customized 'workcation' programs tailored to each company, including accommodation, workspaces, and local tourism experience and leisure support for participating companies.
CJ CheilJedang's Digital Business Division, strengthening its IT and digital-based business capabilities, also participated in a pilot 'corporate Gangwon workcation program' reflecting its work characteristics.
Recently, 'Gangwon Workcation' won the Gold Award in the Global Marketing category at the 'Asia Pacific Tourism Association (PATA) Gold Awards 2022' held in Macau.
As the first in Korea to introduce 'workcation,' Gangwon Province is leading the way with workcation planning exhibitions and influencer marketing related to 'workcation.'
