[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will hold 'Korea Metaverse Festival 2022' (KMF 2022), the nation's largest exhibition in the metaverse field, from the 13th to the 15th at COEX Hall B in Seoul.

A total of 170 companies, including domestic metaverse leading companies such as KT and SK Telecom, will participate in this 'KMF 2022' exhibition, showcasing various metaverse elements, foundational technologies, platforms, and services across 340 booths. This is the largest scale ever.

Now in its seventh year, 'KMF 2022' is themed 'Digital New Continent, Korea Leaps Forward with Metaverse!' and features a variety of events including an opening ceremony, exhibition, global conference, awards ceremony, and business consultation meetings.

In particular, this year, to promote and spread the 'Korea Digital Strategy' announced on the 29th of last month to the public, the exhibition space was designed so that citizens can closely experience government policy achievements and leading technologies and services in the metaverse field. Additionally, through conferences, the latest technology trends and cases can be shared.

At the opening ceremony, an avatar (virtual self) created using digital technology appeared and introduced itself as a 'Metaverse New Human, Meta-min (meaning our citizens in the metaverse world)' before presenting the metaverse policy.

At the 'Global Metaverse Congress,' following the Ministry of Science and ICT's metaverse policy presentation, Julian Gorman of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) delivered a keynote speech, and experts from leading domestic and international metaverse companies such as Epic Games and VERNect presented methodologies for building the metaverse ecosystem.

Domestic major metaverse leading companies KT and SK introduced more diverse and advanced services with 'Geniverse' and 'Ifland,' respectively. The National IT Industry Promotion Agency exhibited metaverse use cases in fields such as medical care, manufacturing, education and training, and firefighting. Additionally, domestic SMEs including VERNect, All IP Information & Communication, Alias, Antreality, and Space Party participated in 2022 KMF to showcase their innovative products and services.

On the 14th, the 'GSMA Conference' and 'Korea Metaverse Summit 2022' will be held, where domestic and international metaverse experts, including Professor Hyun Dae-won from Sogang University’s Graduate School of Metaverse, will discuss various topics and forecast the global spread of the metaverse.

Minister Lee Jong-ho of the Ministry of Science and ICT said in his welcoming remarks, "In the early stages of metaverse new industry growth, it is necessary to develop competitive metaverse technologies and nurture experts to support various fields." He added, "To foster related industries, it is essential to establish a proactive regulatory system such as self-regulation, and we will actively support the swift legislative discussion of metaverse bills currently under discussion in the National Assembly."
