[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] As the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced measures to revitalize the building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) industry ecosystem, Alpha Enerworks, a subsidiary of Alpha Holdings, is expected to benefit from the ministry’s ecosystem activation plan.
Alpha Enerworks is a specialized manufacturer of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) modules and is the world’s first company to commercialize color BIPV modules. It has supplied BIPV modules installed on the exterior walls of buildings such as YG Entertainment’s new headquarters, KT Songpa Tower, and Sinsa Station Mulberry Hills complex, and is currently supplying BIPV modules to the newly constructed Seoul Teachers’ Pension Hall at Yeouido Station intersection.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s announcement, the global BIPV market size is expected to expand more than threefold from 1.6GW ($2.7 billion) in 2021 to 5.6GW ($7.6 billion) in 2026. Domestically, the BIPV market is anticipated to grow significantly as zero-energy building certification is expanded to private buildings starting in 2025.
The ministry plans to restructure subsidy support centered on BIPV, increasing the current BIPV budget share within building support projects from 13.4% to over 30%, and announced preferential subsidy support for local governments that actively promote BIPV dissemination projects. Additionally, by reforming the system to expand BIPV projects in multi-family housing through the creation of zero-energy apartment pilot complexes, the potential market application is expected to broaden.
Furthermore, as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy establishes a BIPV certification system and quality verification becomes standardized, Alpha Enerworks, which possesses advanced module technology, is likely to gain a competitive edge over rivals with lower current technological capabilities as a leading company.
Hyunjin Ahn, CEO of Alpha Enerworks, stated, “Among renewable energies that allow buildings to generate power independently, solar power is the most advantageous considering cost efficiency and construction difficulty. While conventional solar modules expose cells that spoil building aesthetics, using Alpha Enerworks’ color solar modules enables partial self-generation of the building’s electricity consumption without compromising building design.”
