CityLabs Introduces Korea's First Facial Recognition Solution to Prevent Driver's License Identity Theft

[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] CityLabs, a blockchain smart city integrated platform company, announced on the 11th that it will introduce a facial recognition solution to prevent driver's license identity theft for the first time in Korea to advance Jeju Island's mobility sharing service ‘GreeGo’.

‘GreeGo’ is a compound word of Green and Mobility (Go), representing an eco-friendly mobility sharing service. This service was created as part of the ‘Smart City Challenge Project’ promoted by Jeju Island in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport since last year. Jeju Island plans to provide eco-friendly mobility rental and return services as well as public transportation location-related information notification services through GreeGo.

In the second update of GreeGo, CityLabs applied a facial recognition solution to prevent driver's license identity theft. This technology matches the user's driver's license photo with their actual face. Users must pass this step to register on the GreeGo platform. With this solution, it is expected to prevent the recent nationwide issue of driver's license theft in advance.

CityLabs stated that in the upcoming final (third) update of GreeGo, they plan to introduce transfer discount services linking public transportation and mobility, mobility reservations, and optimal route guidance services for PM (Personal Mobility).

Jo Youngjoong, CEO of CityLabs, said, “Recently, cases where minors misuse their parents' driver's licenses or use mobility sharing services indiscriminately without license authentication have frequently occurred, increasing the risk of accidents. With this GreeGo update, as the first mobility sharing service to introduce facial recognition solutions, we expect enhanced security and a significant reduction in accident risks.”

CityLabs was selected as the main operator of the ‘2021 Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Smart City Challenge’ last year. During the project period, they have been providing solutions for advancing Jeju's smart city by utilizing blockchain technology, including building a Smart Hub and an e-3DA platform.
