Chairman Cho Won-tae Introduces Aviation Industry's Climate Change Response Efforts at 'Hanbul Club - Bulhan Club'

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Cho Won-tae, Chairman of Hanjin Group, presented and participated in discussions on the topic of addressing climate change, a key issue in the global aviation industry, at the ‘Hanbul Club-Bulhan Club’ meeting.

The ‘Hanbul Club-Bulhan Club,’ whose meeting was held on the 7th (local time) at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Paris, France, was established in 2016 to commemorate the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France. Each year, leading business figures and intellectuals from both Korea and France engage in intense discussions to seek solutions to major contemporary issues through various efforts.

On this day, Chairman Cho participated in the Energy and Nuclear session and introduced how the aviation industry is responding to climate change through the case of Korean Air.

Chairman Cho mentioned that although the aviation industry’s carbon emissions account for only about 2.5% of global carbon emissions, emissions occur at high altitudes, necessitating proactive measures. To this end, the global aviation industry agreed on a joint goal of ‘carbon neutrality by 2050’ at the IATA General Assembly last October.

Additionally, Chairman Cho introduced Korean Air’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, including ▲improving fuel efficiency of individual flights ▲reducing environmental pollution through in-flight resource recycling ▲carbon offsetting by purchasing carbon-neutral aviation fuel ▲developing and utilizing sustainable aviation fuel ▲introducing next-generation eco-friendly aircraft, and announced plans to take various responsible actions toward the climate crisis in the future.
