[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] On the 6th, Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam, along with the mayors of four special cities including Goyang, Suwon, and Yongin, met with Lee Sang-min, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, to broadly discuss the current issues of special cities.
The Korea Special City Mayors' Council requested active support and cooperation from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to secure practical autonomous authority suitable for the scale of a metropolitan city with a population of one million, including "expanding the composition and revitalizing the operation of the Special City Support Council, and strengthening the support functions for special cities through the newly formed Local Era Committee."
In particular, they proposed practical measures to secure special authority that can respond to increasing administrative demands, such as "legislating the transfer of special affairs through the promotion of local government transfer, increasing the minimum standard personnel for the transfer of special affairs, and directly assigning and increasing long-term education personnel."
Mayor Hong said, "As a regional hub city, we hope for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's active support to lead regional development and realize practical local autonomy so that a livable local era can be achieved anywhere in the Republic of Korea."
