[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] Jeon Juhwan (31), the 'Sindang Station murderer' sentenced to 9 years in prison for stalking and illegal filming, has filed an appeal against the court's ruling. The prosecution also submitted an appeal, claiming the sentence was unfair.
According to the legal community on the 4th, Jeon submitted an appeal to the Criminal Division 12 of the Seoul Western District Court (Chief Judge Andongbeom) on the 30th of last month. This was the day after he was sentenced to 9 years in prison for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes and Stalking Crimes, as well as the Information and Communications Network Act.
He was indicted without detention last year in early October on charges of sending illegal filming materials and threatening the victim, a colleague who joined Seoul Metro at the same time, and sending 351 messages. Additionally, he is accused of stalking by sending 21 messages to the victim from November last year to February this year, urging for a settlement.
In August, after being sentenced to 9 years in prison, Jeon decided to murder the victim and committed the murder on the 14th of last month, the day before the sentencing, in the women's restroom at Sindang Station of the Seoul subway. It is known that he prepared the planned crime by waiting for the victim for about 1 hour and 10 minutes at Sindang Station.
The prosecution also submitted an appeal to the court on the same day. Although the court sentenced according to the prosecution's demand, the prosecution stated, "The court did not issue orders for disclosure of personal information or employment restrictions," and "considering the victim's attitude in court on the day of sentencing, we filed an appeal."
On the 29th of last month, Jeon asked the court to postpone the sentencing date as much as possible, saying, "I hope that the public's attention and media coverage will subside over time."
