Samsung "Mass Production of 1.4nm in 2027"

Samsung "Mass Production of 1.4nm in 2027"

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] Samsung Electronics will mass-produce 2-nanometer (nm, one billionth of a meter) semiconductors in 2025 and 1.4-nanometer semiconductors in 2027. This plan was concretized and officially announced just four months after the announcement of 3-nanometer mass production.

On the 3rd (local time), at the 'Samsung Foundry Forum 2022' held in Silicon Valley, USA, Samsung Electronics revealed its foundry new technologies and business strategies, announcing plans to mass-produce 2-nanometer chips in 2025 and 1.4-nanometer chips in 2027. This comes only four months after the world’s first mass production of the first-generation 3-nanometer process applying Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor technology, which began in June this year. Although there have been reports that Taiwan’s TSMC, the global number one foundry company, is preparing a 1.4-nanometer process, it has never been officially announced.

Samsung Electronics, which is expanding 3-nanometer applications with mass production know-how ahead of its competitors, continues to innovate GAA-based process technology. Factories below 3 nanometers are expected to generate explosive sales in the semiconductor industry. Market research firm Omdia predicted that sales from 3-nanometer processes will begin in 2022, surpass 5-nanometer process sales by 2024, and surge at an average annual growth rate of 98% until 2025. It is expected that all major foundry companies will adopt GAA starting from the 2-nanometer process.

In this environment, Samsung Electronics plans to preemptively introduce GAA in 3-nanometer processes to verify the technology, and through this, establish a stable production infrastructure for 2-nanometer and 1.4-nanometer processes ahead of time to stabilize supply and secure the rapidly growing market below 3 nanometers.

Choi Si-young, President of Samsung Electronics Foundry Division, emphasized, "The success of our customers is the reason for the existence of Samsung Electronics Foundry Division," and added, "Samsung Electronics will become a new standard in the foundry industry as a partner creating a better future."
