[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Metropolitan Government, Hana Insurance, and the Seoul Metropolitan Social Welfare Council announced on the 2nd that they held a business agreement for the ‘ESG Mobility Eco Plus Support Project,’ donating one electric vehicle each to 10 social welfare facilities, at Seoul City Hall on the 30th of last month.

Through this business agreement, Hana Insurance agreed to donate 400 million KRW for the purchase of electric vehicles for Seoul’s social welfare facilities to the Seoul Energy Welfare Citizen Fund. The agreement ceremony was attended by the Director of the Climate and Environment Headquarters of Seoul Metropolitan Government, Kim Jae-young CEO of Hana Insurance, and Kim Hyun-hoon, Chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Social Welfare Council.

Hana Insurance will provide the budget for the electric vehicle support project, Seoul Metropolitan Government will handle promotion and administrative support, and the Seoul Metropolitan Social Welfare Council will be responsible for project planning, implementation, and selecting institutions.

This agreement is part of Hana Insurance’s ESG management (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiative to accompany the mobility-disadvantaged and practice carbon neutrality. It was planned to support electric vehicles to social welfare facilities that either use old diesel vehicles or do not have vehicles, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and improve convenience for users of social welfare facilities.

This electric vehicle purchase support project is limited to social welfare facilities and social welfare corporations receiving subsidies from Seoul Metropolitan Government, excluding profit-oriented business institutions and institutions with political or religious purposes. The application period is until the 7th, and after internal review, support funds will be provided by the end of October.

Meanwhile, the Seoul Energy Welfare Citizen Fund has raised a total of 11.2 billion KRW from 2015 to 2021, carrying out various projects such as residential energy efficiency improvements, replacement of high-efficiency energy products, and support for cooling and heating supplies for approximately 360,000 energy-vulnerable households. The number of participating citizens and companies has increased annually, establishing itself as a leading platform for energy welfare.

Kim Jae-young, CEO of Hana Insurance, said, “It is crucial for companies to take the lead in practicing carbon neutrality to address the increasingly severe climate crisis,” adding, “We will continue to strive to strengthen ESG management (Environmental, Social, and Transparent Management) related to carbon emissions.” Kim Hyun-hoon, Chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Social Welfare Council, said, “We thank Hana Insurance for supporting the accessibility of welfare services by providing eco-friendly electric vehicles to welfare service providers through this agreement,” and added, “We will prioritize supporting institutions that have not previously received vehicle support.”

Yoo Yeon-sik, Director of the Climate and Environment Headquarters of Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, “We thank the Hana Insurance officials for their special donation supporting energy-vulnerable groups and contributing to carbon emission reduction,” and added, “We hope that the vehicles supported through this business agreement will become messengers connecting neighbors and the world.”
