Hyundai Mobis Targets Future Mobility Market with '5G+V2X' Integrated Solution

Autonomous Driving and Connected Car Market Strategy in Full Swing

Hyundai Mobis Targets Future Mobility Market with '5G+V2X' Integrated Solution

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Mobis is intensifying its focus on the autonomous driving and connected car markets, which are key areas in the future smart mobility sector. Hyundai Mobis has consecutively secured V2X communication technology and 5G communication technology, which are essential element technologies for autonomous driving and connected cars, and plans to introduce mobility innovation technologies integrated with existing autonomous driving sensors, controllers, and IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) systems to the market.

Hyundai Mobis announced on the 3rd that it has recently succeeded in independently developing the ‘vehicle 5G communication module’ technology necessary for realizing future mobility services. The ‘vehicle 5G communication module’ is based on 5G mobile communication characterized by ultra-high speed, ultra-low latency, and massive connectivity. It is a core technology for advancing autonomous driving and connected systems based on large-capacity data processing and real-time connectivity.

The 5G communication module developed by Hyundai Mobis combines communication chips, memory, RF (radio frequency) circuits, GPS, and other components. Hyundai Mobis plans to first apply this technology to 5G communication-based vehicle telematics services.

Telematics is a technology that uses wireless communication networks to exchange vehicle information with external control centers, providing users with services such as safety, convenience, and infotainment. Representative telematics functions include remote vehicle control, over-the-air (OTA) updates, real-time traffic information sharing, and eCall (emergency call system).

The telematics market is also experiencing rapid growth. According to global market research firms, the worldwide installation rate of 5G telematics modules, which was 2 million units in 2021, is expected to increase 26-fold to 52 million units by 2028. Hyundai Mobis’s global order portfolio is also expanding to connectivity-related items that require high-quality and stable communication networks.

In particular, advanced communication networks capable of processing data quickly and accurately are crucial for full autonomous driving. Hyundai Mobis already possesses core technologies for autonomous driving implementation, including radar, lidar, camera sensors, and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) technologies that assist safe and convenient driving. Starting with the internalization of the 5G communication module, Hyundai Mobis aims to pioneer new markets in the autonomous driving field and secure a favorable position.

In fact, Hyundai Mobis plans to target the global market with an integrated solution that combines the already secured V2X communication technology and the newly developed 5G communication technology. V2X is a technology that connects vehicles, people, objects, infrastructure, and networks through ultra-high-speed communication networks and is one of the core technologies of autonomous driving and connected systems.

The 5G+V2X integrated solution is characterized by its ability to perform various functions for the safety and convenience of vehicle users, such as sharing sensor information between vehicles, collision avoidance between vehicles, automatic deceleration in child protection zones, and vehicle control in emergencies. However, it is still in the early market formation stage as an advanced technology area in the future mobility sector. Currently, research and development for applying 5G+V2X integrated solutions are actively underway in the global automotive market, mainly among premium automakers.

Choi Jun-bae, Head of Hyundai Mobis Connectivity/Audio Sector, said, “In addition to our existing competitiveness in autonomous driving sensors and IVI technology, we will do our best to develop differentiated new mobility technologies by integrating 5G+V2X integrated technology.”

Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis recently expanded its strategic partnership with KT by conducting a share swap worth 750 billion KRW together with Hyundai Motor Company to strengthen cooperation in the future mobility field. Starting from this, Hyundai Mobis plans to proactively develop 6G communication-based technologies optimized for autonomous vehicles and secure leadership in the global mobility market.
