Starbucks Delivers 10,000 Bags of Eco-Friendly Fertilizer to Tea Farmers in Boseong County

Coffee Grounds-Containing Compost Rich in Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium Helps Improve Soil Fertility

Starbucks Delivers 10,000 Bags of Eco-Friendly Fertilizer to Tea Farmers in Boseong County

[Boseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Cheon-seok] Jeollanam-do Boseong-gun announced that on the 29th, it held a ‘Tea Farmers Starbucks Organic Coffee Compost Delivery Ceremony’ at Borimje in Boseong-eup in collaboration with Starbucks Korea.

About 20 related personnel attended the event, including Kim Cheol-woo, the governor of Boseong-gun, Kim Ji-young, head of Starbucks’ social contribution team, and Seo Sang-gyun, chairman of the Boseong Tea Producers Association. Starbucks delivered 10,000 bags (200 tons / worth 40 million KRW) of organic compost made from coffee grounds to tea farmers in Boseong-gun.

The organic compost made with 10% coffee grounds is a natural fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, and other nutrients essential for plant growth, with a high organic matter content, known to help improve soil strength.

A Starbucks official who prepared the event said, “We will strive to recycle coffee grounds through support for eco-friendly coffee ground compost farms, faithfully fulfill our social responsibility management that considers the environment, and create cases of coexistence with local communities.”

Kim Cheol-woo, governor of Boseong-gun, said, “Tea farmers in Boseong have a stubborn philosophy that they must practice organic farming even though it is difficult. Although the county supports organic fertilizer every year, the burden of purchasing eco-friendly agricultural materials is heavy for farmers. We are very grateful that Starbucks decided to support the farmers, and we hope that the culture of coexistence with Starbucks will continue.”

Meanwhile, the eco-friendly compost delivered by Starbucks this time is scheduled to be supplied to 18 farms cultivating tea in Boseong-gun.
