Citizen Awards and Citizen Ideas Ceremony, Conductor Seo Hwitae's "FUN" Classical Concert
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Ulsan City will hold the ‘22nd Ulsan Citizens' Day Ceremony’ on September 30th at 2 PM in the city hall auditorium, attended by Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, City Council Chairman Kim Ki-hwan, recipients of the Citizen Award and Citizen Innovation Award, heads of organizations and institutions, and about 500 general citizens.
The event will proceed with the reading of the Citizen Charter, awarding of the Citizen and Innovation Awards, commemorative speeches, and congratulatory remarks.
The Citizen Charter will be read by Choi Hyun-seop, head of the Hyundai Motor Volunteer Center, symbolizing the spread of civic consciousness through volunteerism for the ‘Newly Created Great Ulsan.’
Mr. Choi has practiced volunteer activities in a wide range of fields for the past 30 years, accumulating over 16,000 hours of volunteer work, and has been striving to expand the base of community volunteering.
The Citizen Awards will be presented to five individuals: Im Yong-sik (social service category), Son Soo-min (safety and environment category), Choi Jong-du (culture and tourism category), Lee Sung-geol (sports category), and Ahn Kyung-kwan (academics and science technology category).
The Citizen Award is the most prestigious award given by Ulsan City, and the recipients are inducted into the Ulsan Museum Hall of Fame.
The Citizen Innovation Award is given by Ulsan City to citizens who provide creative proposals to encourage and guarantee a bright future for the city.
The recipients are Lee Gui-ja (proposal to install automatic sensor lighting in the disabled restroom at the Exhibition and Convention Center), Choi Kyung-sook (proposal to install anti-slip tape inside Daewang Byeol Ainuri), and Yang Seung-hyun (proposal to install winter migratory bird ecological information boards and telescopes at Taehwa River).
Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom said, “This year marks the 60th anniversary of Ulsan’s designation as an industrial district and the 25th anniversary of its promotion to a metropolitan city. Although the current situation in Ulsan is challenging, with the establishment of Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicle-only factory, the opening of Iye-ro, and the future lifting of the greenbelt, we will make Ulsan a ‘new and great Ulsan’ where young people from across the country flock again. I ask all citizens to actively participate so that the upcoming 2022 National (Disabled) Sports Festival can become a historic opportunity for Ulsan to achieve new changes and leaps forward.”
To create a celebratory atmosphere for the 22nd Ulsan Citizens' Day, the city will hold a free ‘Fun (FUN) Classical Concert’ with conductor Seo Hwi-tae at the Culture and Arts Center at 8 PM on the 30th.
‘Ulsan Citizens' Day’ commemorates the day in the 13th year of King Taejo of Goryeo (930 AD), on Jeongmyo day in September (October 1st in the solar calendar), when Park Yun-ung, a local lord of Ulsan, submitted to Heunglyebu, whose jurisdiction area is similar to the current administrative district of Ulsan City. To commemorate this and to foster citizens’ pride and love for their hometown and to create an opportunity for citizen unity, the ‘Ulsan Citizens' Day Ordinance’ was enacted and promulgated on December 8, 2000, and the first Citizens' Day ceremony was held in 2001, continuing to the present.
