"Catch Amazon and MS"... Naver Cloud Accelerates Southeast Asia Strategy

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Choi] Naver Cloud is making its debut at the largest cloud expo in Southeast Asia, knocking on the door of the global market. While expanding its customer base, it plans to enhance cloud services provided locally to strengthen its position in a market dominated by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft (MS).

First Participation in Global Cloud Expo... Collaboration with Intel

According to the IT industry on the 29th, Naver Cloud will participate in the 'Cloud Expo Asia 2022' held in Singapore for two days starting next month on the 12th. It is the largest cloud expo in Southeast Asia, with about 20,000 attendees from Southeast Asian IT companies, financial institutions, and public organizations at the previous event (2019).

This is Naver Cloud's first time participating in an overseas cloud expo. Since customers from various Southeast Asian countries gather in one place, it plans to introduce its cloud services and expand its business network.

Naver Cloud will set up an exhibition booth to showcase its cloud platform, security technologies, and smart work solution Naver Works. An AI platform Clova experience zone will be arranged to provide hands-on opportunities. At the presentation session, Hongseok Ahn, Head of Southeast Asia Business Development at Naver Cloud, will participate as a key speaker to share cases of collaboration with customers.

After the expo, it will expand business partnerships. It has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Intel to cooperate in the Asian market and plans to form partnerships with the Singapore Startup Association (ACE) and the Singapore Games Association (SGGA). Through this, it aims to support local Singaporean companies in expanding overseas with cloud services.

Enhancing Local Services... Leadership Changes Also Expected

To target Southeast Asia, local services are also being expanded. Naver Cloud currently operates data centers (regions) in Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan. It is upgrading to raise the number of products offered in local regions to the same level as in Korea. This is not only to operate overseas regions so that domestic companies can expand their business abroad but also to attract overseas companies as customers. This month, it launched blockchain services in the Singapore region. This service provides necessary functions to enable blockchain development and construction even without owning proprietary technology.

From next year, leadership changes will accelerate global business. Wonki Park, co-CEO of Naver Cloud, will take on the role of Head of Asia-Pacific Business Development to focus on global business, while co-CEO Yuwon Kim will be responsible for advancing the current cloud business. Through this, the goal is to become a 'Top 3' player in the Southeast Asian market.

The Southeast Asian cloud market is rapidly growing. According to market research firm IDC, the Asia-Pacific cloud market size is expected to reach $76 billion (approximately 109 trillion KRW) by 2023, more than double the size compared to 2020. Global cloud giants are already fiercely competing. While AWS and MS dominate the market, Chinese companies such as Alibaba and Tencent are also aggressively advancing. According to global market research firm Synergy Research Group, global IT companies have increased their investments in Southeast Asian data centers by nearly 70% over the past three years.
