Various New Works Unveiled Under the Theme 'One Way to Meet Paintings'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The solo exhibition "Painting, One Way to Meet" by artist Yoo Hyunkyung, who is based in Berlin, Germany and active between Seoul and Berlin, will be held until the 22nd of next month.
This exhibition is planned as a portrait invitation exhibition. It showcases many new works created by the artist based on actual models or subjects.
Most of the paintings presented in the exhibition are works that transfer relationships formed through various emotional interactions in everyday situations onto the canvas according to the artist's unique emotional line.
Although starting from a relationship-centered perspective, as it reaches the conclusion, the artist presents to the viewers a new creative method of existential time that even makes one forget those relationships through her own original expression. This characteristic is mainly prominent in the form of portraits, so the gallery explained that this solo exhibition is composed solely of portraits.
The artist does not get swayed or buried in trivial emotions but employs a disgustingly explicit and honest brushwork. The expression method, which initially stays true to her own feelings and gradually focuses on the interrelationship with the subject, adds depth to the understanding of the figure on the canvas proportional to the density built up stroke by stroke.
The portraits completed with a unique brushstroke have the charm of simultaneously satisfying the viewer's spontaneous emotions and the rhythm of space through the figure or landscape, rather than focusing on which parts of the canvas are left empty or filled. Also, the influence of spatial emptiness on the formal completeness can be confirmed throughout the works.
Yoo Hyunkyung majored in Western painting at Seoul National University College of Fine Arts and its graduate school. Starting with the SeMA support exhibition at the Seoul Museum of Art in 2009, she has participated in 19 solo exhibitions and over 40 curated group exhibitions, including this exhibition at Hori Art Space. Since being selected for overseas residencies such as Schloss Pl?schow Residency in Germany (2011), Rote Fabrik in Zurich, Switzerland (2014), and Doosan Residency in New York (2016), she has been active both domestically and internationally.
During the solo exhibition period, the artist is also invited to the special exhibition "The Birth of Painting" held on the first floor of Hangaram Art Museum at the Seoul Arts Center, where she plans to reach a diverse audience.
