Gangwon-do Confirms 15.3 Billion Won in Special Grants for August Flood Damage

Securing 91.8 Billion KRW of National Funds (67%) Out of 137.4 Billion KRW Total Restoration Cost in Gangwon-do

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangwon Province announced on the 27th that it has secured 15.3 billion KRW in special grants to permanently restore facilities damaged by the heavy rains in August.

The special grants account for 38% of the province's self-repair cost of 40.5 billion KRW out of the total restoration amount of 137.4 billion KRW.

According to the province, this will somewhat ease the burden as provincial and city/county funds need to be invested.

The special grants were decided by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to support self-repair projects targeting six cities/counties, including Hongcheon-gun and Hoengseong-gun, which were declared special disaster areas, as well as the provincial government headquarters.

The 5.4 billion KRW damage restoration budget for the provincial government headquarters will be allocated as follows: 2.3 billion KRW for 21 local roads, 2.4 billion KRW for 25 local rivers, and 700 million KRW for other facilities.

By region, the amounts are 1.4 billion KRW for Hongcheon, 5.1 billion KRW for Hoengseong, and 3.4 billion KRW for four cities/counties including Gangneung-si (Gangneung 700 million KRW, Pyeongchang 1.7 billion KRW, Yanggu 500 million KRW, Inje 500 million KRW).

In particular, with the government's special grants supporting self-repair projects, Gangwon Province secured 91.8 billion KRW in national funds (67%) out of the total restoration amount of 137.4 billion KRW.

Park Dong-ju, Director of the Disaster Safety Office, said, "We plan to carry out administrative procedures such as detailed design for prompt permanent restoration and minimize inconvenience to residents."
